Google DeepMind Announces AlphaFold 4 Protein Design Model

Google DeepMind launched AlphaFold 4 on July 17 2026 with the ability to design entirely new proteins that fold correctly in wet-lab tests 92 percent of the time. The model handles protein complexes up to 12 million atoms and generates sequences conditioned on desired binding sites. Researchers at 180 institutions received early access starting June 2026.

Training used 340 million protein structures from the Protein Data Bank plus 1.2 billion synthetic sequences. AlphaFold 4 reduces design cycles from months to days for enzymes and antibody scaffolds. The model also predicts conformational changes upon ligand binding with 3.1 angstrom average error.

Previous AlphaFold versions focused on structure prediction rather than design. DeepMind partnered with 23 pharmaceutical companies for validation studies. The new release includes an open-source diffusion module for sequence generation.

Google Cloud offers free compute credits for academic users up to 5000 GPU hours per project. Commercial licensing begins in Q4 2026.
