Perplexity AI closed a 1.1 billion dollar Series D round on July 17 2026 at a 14 billion post-money valuation. Fidelity led the round with participation from Samsung Next and existing investors. The company reported 340 million dollars in annualized recurring revenue as of June 30 2026.

Proceeds will fund expansion of its real-time retrieval index to 12 billion documents by December 2026. Perplexity plans to hire 400 additional engineers focused on enterprise search and citation verification features. The round closed three weeks after the company reached 28 million monthly active users.

Perplexity was founded in 2022 and previously raised 250 million dollars in a Series C round in October 2025. The startup has positioned itself as an alternative to traditional search engines by combining large language models with live web retrieval. Revenue grew 340 percent year-over-year through Q2 2026.

Competitors including You.com and new entrants from Microsoft have launched similar conversational search products in 2026. Perplexity maintains a 92 percent citation accuracy rate according to internal benchmarks released in June 2026. The company operates data centers in Oregon and Frankfurt.

Why this matters

Search traffic migration to AI-native interfaces accelerated in 2026 with traditional engines losing 7 percent market share. Perplexity's valuation reflects investor confidence in monetization through enterprise subscriptions priced at 40 dollars per user monthly. The round sets a benchmark for other AI search startups seeking funding this summer.

Enterprise customers now represent 45 percent of revenue after the launch of Perplexity Enterprise Pro in March 2026. The company will use part of the capital to acquire a small retrieval startup based in Berlin. Analysts expect Perplexity to file for an IPO in 2027.

The funding round was oversubscribed by 60 percent according to sources familiar with the deal. Perplexity will announce new partnerships with Samsung devices on July 22 2026.
