Mistral AI announced an 850 million dollar Series C on July 18 2026 led by Microsoft with participation from BNP Paribas and European Investment Bank. Post-money valuation hit 11.5 billion dollars. The round closed in 11 days after term sheet signing.
Proceeds will fund a 40 thousand GPU cluster in France and Germany to serve EU data residency requirements. Mistral also open-sourced its 22 billion parameter multimodal model under Apache 2.0 on the same day. Revenue reached 340 million dollars annualized in Q2 2026.
The company was founded in 2023 by former DeepMind and Meta researchers. It previously raised 600 million dollars in 2025. Mistral now employs 420 people across Paris London and Munich.
Microsoft will integrate Mistral models into Azure Government clouds for European customers. The startup committed to keeping its largest models available via API only inside the EU.
Why this matters
The round demonstrates continued investor appetite for European AI champions despite US dominance. Sovereign cloud requirements are becoming a major market differentiator.
Smaller nations gain credible alternatives to US hyperscalers for sensitive workloads. Mistral valuation signals that open-weight strategies can still command high multiples.
Next funding round is expected in 2027 after the new cluster reaches full capacity. Mistral plans to release a 180 billion parameter model by March 2027.
